Apatura Iris (Purple Emperor) lives in woodland throughout southern and central Europe, including the South of England. See it in flight from June to August. Argynnis Paphia (Silver-Washed Fritillary)lives in wooded areas throughout most of Europe. See it in flight from June to August. Black Hairstreak (Strymonidia Pruni) lives in old woodland, scrubland and blackthorn hedges through most of Europe except the far North and South. See it in flight in the English midlands from June to August. Brimstone (Gonepteryx Rhamni) a long-lived butterfly inhabiting open woodland, hedges and gardens. See it in flight from June to September and again in Spring after hibernation. Chalkhill (Lysandra Coridon) flits gaily around flowery slopes from June to August. The silvery-blue male is a more spectacular creature than the brown female. Comma (Polygonia C-Album) found throughout Europe except Northern Britain and Ireland. It lives on stinging nettles and flies June to September and again in Spring, following hibernation. Crambus Pratellus (Grass Moth) flies almost anywhere there’s grass throughout Europe from May to August. Cynthia Cardui (Painted Lady) loves parks, gardens and any flowery area. Found throughout Europe but migrates to Africa in winter. See it in flight from April to October. Dingy (Erynnis Tages) is the only butterfly of its type in Ireland but flies April to August over open grassland throughout most of Europe except for the far North. Duke of Burgundy (Hamearis Lucina) likes scrubby hillsides and open woodland. Found in Southern and Central Europe, but never in Scotland, Wales or Ireland. It flies from May to September. Glanville (Melitaea Cinxia)appears throughout Europe, except the far North, but avoids the British Isles with the curious exception of the Isle of Wight. Likes anywhere with lots of flowers, including road-sides and flies May to September. Grayling (Hipparchia Semele) is found in most of Europe excepting the far North. Flies from June to September over coastal dunes and across heaths and rough grassland. Grey Dagger (Acronicta Psi)inhabits woods, parks, gardens and hedgerows throughout Europe except the extreme North. See it in flight from June to July. Holly Blue (Celastrina Argiolus) a particularly beautiful butterfly found everywhere in Europe except Scotland. Flies April to September in open woodland, parks and gardens. Iron Prominent (Notodonta Dromedarius) is found in Northern and Central Europe. It flies from April to September in light woodland, heaths, hedgerows and gardens. Lattice Brown (Kirinia Roxelana) can be seen flying in dry, scrubby grassland and old orchards throughout South-East Europe from May to July. Lulworth (Thymelicus Acteon) is found in open, grassy areas along the South coast of England and across most of Southern and Central Europe from May to September. Peacock (Inachis Io) ranges throughout Europe apart from the far North and even occasionally reaches Iceland. This butterfly likes wasteland and gardens, feeds from stinging nettles and flies June to September, then again in Spring after hibernation. Pyrgus Malvae (Grizzled Skipper) is found in rough grassland, heaths and woodland rides throughout most of Europe except Scotland and Ireland. Flies April to August and is particularly fond of wild strawberries. Ringlet (Aphantopus Hyperantus) loves damp, lush grass, shady hedgerows and woodland rides. Flies June to August in most of Europe except the extreme North and South. Tithonus (Gatekeeper) flies July to September throughout Southern and Central Europe (except for Scotland) near hedges, scrubby grassland and woodland edges. Umber (Erannis Defoliaria) is a very common moth which flies from October to February in a wide range of habitats throughout most of Europe. |
